There are so many ways you can create more space or extra rooms in the home that you love. In doing so you can avoid the turmoil and costs of moving whilst adding to the value of your house.

Although they are typically thought of as small extensions to the front of a house, porches can also provide extra space at the side or the back.
Due to their size most porches do not require planning permission.
A sunroom is essentially a conservatory that has a solid roof and walls. It includes plenty of glazing to bring in all that sunlight.
Planning permission may be required, but often it is not.
Single storey extensions
Single storey extensions are built onto a part of the house so that one or more of its sides is attached to your property.
These are typically built at the side or the back of the house – many Victorian houses have a side return that can be used for your extension without taking away any space from your back garden.
Single storey extensions can be used to create extra spaces such as a dining room, an open-plan kitchen, a home office, a downstairs bedroom, a utility room or a downstairs bathroom.
One of the main considerations here must be the size of the extension and its impact upon neighbours, but other important things to bear in mind are how the roof will work with the existing building and the positions of flues, drains and excavations.
Single storey extensions might not require planning permission.
Two storey extension
A two storey extension can be built to any part of your home, but it is generally added to the side or back. As it is often used to add a bedroom to the upstairs it can greatly add to your home’s value, but the second floor room could also be used for other purposes, such as to add to or extend your bathroom.
Due to the height of a two storey extension the potential impact on neighbouring properties is greater which can limit it as a possibility to those who own a detached or semi-detached property.

Wrap around house extension
If your home is suitable you can create some fantastic living spaces by using a wrap around extension. These are created by combining a side return extension with a rear extension. By building your side wall closer to the neighbouring building and moving the back wall of your property into the rear garden, an L shaped space is created that can be used to rearrange your downstairs living space.
You could choose to use this to create two rooms, to have a large, spacious and bright living area or you can take the opportunity to remodel your entire ground floor and create a larger kitchen, a separate dining area, a guest bedroom and a spacious lounge.
Planning permission is likely to be required.
An over-structure extension
This is an extension that is most usually built over the top of a garage (but it can be achieved over any room that does not have a second floor).
Many UK homes built within the last 40 years have a single storey side garage. This offers you the opportunity to build an additional first floor over the garage.
There can be obstacles encountered in building these extensions, but many of these can be overcome. These include extra costs where the existing garage has only single-skin brickwork and the need to assess the structure’s foundations.
Planning permission will almost certainly be required.
Loft conversions offer an ideal way to create extra living space at a relatively low cost. Whilst they do not physically extend your house they do free up what has been simply storage space and allow it to be used as a living space.
